Prof. Onno Van der Hart

Causing, denying and experiencing abuse: Perpetrator-imitating, perpetrator-idealizing,

and victimized parts

Onno van der Hart, PhD, until 2017 a psychologist/psychotherapist in Amstelveen , the Netherlands, and still active in supervision and consultation, is emeritus professor of psychopathology of chronic traumatization, Utrecht University. He received a number of awards for his work, is first author of The Haunted Self (2006) and co-author of Coping with trauma-related dissociation (2011) and of Treating trauma-related dissociation (2017). He is co-editor of the most recently published book, Rediscovering Pierre Janet: Trauma, dissociation, and a new context for psychoanalysis (2019).

The way in which parents and significant relate to the chronically abused children is reflected in the dynamics of these dissociative children's inner world. In other words, the ways they talk (and behave) to these children become these victims' inner voices (and actions). From a perspective of trauma-generated dissociation of the personality, these voices represent distinct dissociative parts--each with its own first-person perspective. In this lecture, the focus is on the characteristics of, in particular, perpetrator-imitating, perpetrator-idealizing, and victimized parts--all with their distinct ways of perceiving and coping with the abuse, and recommended therapeutic ways of relating to them.
